How To Replace The Front Bumper Cover On A 2001-05 Honda Civic

Posted on: 29 December 2016

The icy roads in the Midwest this winter has already caused thousands of accidents this winter. Cars have been sliding into ditches and into the back of other cars. When this happens, even at low speeds, it often damages the front cover on the bumper of the cars. Most bumpers are made out of plastic nowadays and it is quicker and less expensive to replace the front cover than it is to try and repair the plastic after a collision. Replacing the front bumper cover is something most car owners can do themselves in about an hour or so. If the front bumper cover on your 2001-05 Honda Civic has gotten damaged in an accident and you want to replace it yourself, here is how you can do it.

You Will Need:

  • Flat Head Screwdriver
  • Phillips Screwdriver
  • 8mm Socket
  • Ratchet
  • Pliers

Remove Damaged Bumper Cover

The first thing you need to do is take off the front bumper cover and inspect the car for structural damage.

Open the hood of the car and look along the top of the bumper cover. There are four plastic clips along the top edge of the bumper cover which you will have to remove. Pop the heads up on the clips with the flathead screwdriver. There are also six clips along the bottom edge of the bumper cover underneath the front end of the car you have to remove. If the clips are hard to pull out, grab the head of them with a pair of pliers and pull them out.

There is an 8mm bolt over the top of the front wheels that connect the front bumper cover to the frame of the car. Remove the bolts with an 8mm socket and ratchet.

Grab the side of the bumper cover and pull it out. The bumper will detach from the bumper frame. Remove the bumper cover and set it aside. If you don;t see any structural damage, you can just put on a new bumper cover to fix the car.

New Bumper Cover

Since this is an older car and you don;t want to spend the money to buy a brand new bumper cover, you may want to check around for a good bumper cover at a local salvage yard that isn't damaged and matches the color of your car.

Set the new bumper onto the bumper frame and connect the clips at the top of the cover to the car to hold it in place. Replace the 8mm bolts in the above the tires and then clip the bottom of the cover to the bottom of the car to finish.
